Belinda
Hybrid Musk
Origin - Bentall, 1936
Parentage - Unknown
Color - Deep pink/white centers
Foliage - Dark green
Thorns - Light
Size - 4' h. x 5' w. (shrub)
Fragrance - Moderate, musky
Repeat bloom - Yes
Disease resistance - Very good
Hardiness - Zone 6
This is one of my favorite roses because it is so dependable and so beautiful. It is very similar to Ballerina except the color is a deeper pink with a white eye. It measures 4 feet high x 5 feet wide and would be very effective as a hedge but can also be used as a moderate climber. It is stunning simply as a specimen plant and this is the way I grow it. Like most hybrid musk roses, it can tolerate considerable shade. I have it placed in a difficult location for roses, a spot with very dry soil and under the afternoon shade of a line of hackberry trees. Belinda does not seem to mind this and always amazes with a beautiful show each year.
The blooms come in clusters so heavy that they hang toward the ground. It is a rose that is actually more beautiful from a distance than close-up. Repeat bloom is good but not as impressive as the first show in the spring. Belinda is also very carefree - I've never had any problems with disease and the only attention I give it is a generous supply of compost and well rotted manure in early spring and occasional liquid fertilizer or fish emulsion throughout the late spring and summer.
