Crabapple "Radiant"
Malus 'Radiant'
Mature Height/Spread: 15-30 ft./ 15/30 ft.
Growth Rate: Fast
Light Requirements: Full sun
Foliage: Toothed leaves emerge reddish purple in spring but mature to green by summer
Flower/Fruit: Deep reddish-pink flowers (to 1 3/4” diameter) that bloom in spring (April). Flowers are followed by bright red crabapples (to 1/2” diameter) that mature in fall.
Hardy to Zone 4
A beautiful tree that seems to just get better. I have not noticed this tree producing much fruit but I'm sure the birds eat them. No noticeable problems after 15 years. Crabapple trees can be prone to a host of maladies, such as scab, fire blight, rusts, leaf spot and powdery mildew. However, this variety seems to be tough. I've never sprayed the tree.
Easy to grow in average, well-drained soil.
