Like its namesake, this is truly a romantic rose as well as an exceptional one. The velvety red (almost black) hybrid tea like blooms are intensely fragrant and best of all, they adore the heat. It is a mannerly climber and seldom exceeds 12 feet and can be used on low fences, trellises, pillars, and arches. It also produces nice rose hips.
At my former residence, a small apartment, I had a beautiful Don Juan rose growing on a west facing trellis at my back door. It thrived there and for some reason, I've had problems growing another one at my current home. It is true that this is a tender rose and cannot tolerate extremely cold temperatures. So place it carefully, preferably in a sheltered location, and mulch it heavily (about 1-3 feet) in the winter with leaves or pine needles. Another disadvantage is a tendency for blackspot, which it always gets.
