The Name of the Rose - Named for the wife of an amateur rose enthusiast who lived on the French Cote d'Or.
In my opinion this is the best Bourbon to grow in the South. A beautiful rose with many fine attributes, Zephirine Drouhin should be placed in a location where you can enjoy it. As with most bourbon roses, fragrance is outstanding. This is one of the few old roses that I see at my local nurseries every year so I don't think it is difficult to find.
This is a moderate climber that can be trained to a pillar or grown on a trellis or archway. I think it would be lovely growing along the rails of a porch or veranda. I would avoid placing it against a wall since good air circulation will help keep disease at bay. The new canes start out burgundy in color and advances to a darker green. Very few thorns are present so training the canes is not a hassle. Don't expect too much from this rose during the first two years - it needs time to get established.
Disease resistance is average. Blackspot can be expected but not to the severity of other bourbon roses, like Variegata Di Bologna or Madame Isaac Pereire.
