Ballerina
Hybrid Musk
Origin - Bentall, 1937
Parentage - Unknown
Color - Soft pink/white centers
Foliage - Medium green
Thorns - Light
Size - 5' x 5' (shrub)
Fragrance - Mild
Repeat bloom - Yes
Disease resistance - Good/fair
Hardiness - Zone 6
When I first read the description of Ballerina in a rose catalog, I thought that it might serve well for a problem area near the house where a mass of dead crape myrtle roots proved impossible to move and dangerous to mow around. Ballerina did the job and covered the area with a cascading fountain of beautiful blooms. It thrived there for many years but eventually started to develop blackspot so bad that I had to remove it.
When in bloom, it forms a massive fountain shape (5 ft. x 5 ft.) which is covered with small delicate pink blooms with white centers. The flowers resemble the dogwood and repeat throughout the summer and into the fall. It is beautiful growing carefree but I have also seen it trained as a climber with spectacular results. Very suspectible to blackspot however, so I recommend with caution.
