A rose no longer in our garden and one that I truly miss. This is a most striking single rose that has many positive attributes. The blooms are blood red in color with a white center and the blossoms are slightly ruffled. The foliage is equally striking - a dark, glossy green that looks as though the leaves have been waxed. Because of the intense red color, Dortmund is a rose that must be placed carefully in the garden because it can overpower everything around it. I have seen photos of this rose growing on swags and posts in Texas but it has not shown that much vigor in my garden. I first tried it growing on a fence but was not pleased because growth is leggy and scarce at the bottom. I am currently growing it on a post. It repeats bloom well, especially when deadheaded. Needs full sun, does not do with partial shade! Produces nice large orange hips in the fall.
