The Name of the Rose - Named for a family member of the hybridizer.
The heritage of this beautiful rose is unknown but it was probably a cross between an Alba and a noisette. Mme. Plantier makes a sprawling shrub (5 x 5) and can be trained as a climber. Large clusters of plump pink buds open to pure white blossoms that have a green eye in the center. The blossoms are so tightly clustered, however, that the eye is difficult to see. Fragrance is outstanding. The light green foliage is very disease resistant and it is practically thornless. It also does very well in shade. So does it have any drawbacks? Only one - it only blooms once which is a shame. This was one of Vita Sackville Wests' favorite roses and she grew it up an apple tree at Sissinghurst.
