"Fantin-Latour"
Old European Roses
(Centifolias, Gallicas, Damasks, Albas & Mosses)
The roses here - albas, gallicas, damasks, centifolias and mosses - flourished during the Renaissance. Each type has their individual differences but overall they have similar characteristics. They typically grow into shrubs 4 to 6 feet and bloom once during the spring. They were bred for cool temperatures and harsh winters and most benefit from some afternoon shade in the South. Madame Plantier, for example, grows and blooms beautifully in my garden with only a few hours of morning sun.
