Pansy
(Viola wittrockiana)
Hardy to Zone 4
Bloom Time - Entire growing season
Colors - Purple, blue, white, yellow, orange
Foliage - Ovate, mid to deep green
Size - 6-9 inches
Exposure - Full sun/partial shade
Culture - Pansies can be grown in containers or in the ground. They are wonderful planted in masses and provide color when little else is blooming. Give them a medium-rich soil mixture that doesn't dry out. Fertilize once every week with a liquid based fertilizer (even during the winter months except during wet spells). Full sun is preferable if plants are watered well but partial shade is fine too. Pansies are cool weather plants and when the spring temperatures start to heat up, they will lanquish and will eventually die in the summer. Replace them in April or May with another heat-loving annual.
