Joseph Pemberton, hybridizer of the first hybrid musk roses, died in 1926 and his sister (who shared his love of roses) introduced 'Robin Hood' the following year. This rose grows to three to four feet high and wide and is often used as a low hedge rose. I grow it near a bench, where its pliable branches drape across it. Most describe the color of the blooms, which occur in heavy clusters that cascade toward the ground, as light red, but to me they look fushia. The blooms are usually streaked with white, have white centers and small gold stamens. 'Robin Hood' is a charming rose and one that has been used frequently in rose breeding. It is the seed parent of the popular floribunda rose 'Iceberg'.
