Garden in Winter
January 10, 2011
The winter climate in north Alabama is, on average, mild and variable. Extreme fluctuations are common - the temperature can be in the 60s one day and in the 20s the next. This often can drive the gardener and our plants crazy! Snow is a rare occurrence but usually we get at least one snowfall each year. Sometimes, like in 2011, we might get up to 3 snowfalls (which included 8 inches on January 9-10). Snow usually occurs in January or February (although we have had snow as late as April). The garden has a magical quality when it is covered with snow and I love how quiet and still everything is.
Snow gets everyone excited and crazy but ice storms can be another matter. The destructive ice storm of 1994, which left us without power for 5 days, was no fun. It also did damage to several trees and plants.
